Spotify testaa asiakasuskollisuutta korottamalla hintoja – ainakin Norjassa

Pörssiin noin kuukausi sitten listautuneella Spotifyllä on kovat tavoitteet loppuvuodelle, sillä se on Bloombergin mukaan kaavaillut nostavansa ilmaiskäyttäjiensä määrän 200 miljoonaan ja maksullisten käyttäjien määrän 96 miljoonaan. Ilmaiskäyttäjiä pyrittäisiin houkuttelemaan maksulliselle puolelle, joka tuottaa 90 prosenttia yhtiön tuloksesta.

Tällä viikolla Spotify esitteli uuden version sovelluksestaan. Se antoi ilmaiskäyttäjille enemmän valinnanvaraa soitettavan musiikin suhteen. 15 erikoissoittolistalla voi määritellä nyt aikaisempaa paremmin sen, millaista musiikkia kuuntelee.

Vastaavasti maksullisen puolen asiakkaille on luvassa hinnankorotuksia – ainakin testimielessä. Bloombergin mukaan Spotify kokeilee Norjassa toukokuusta alkaen 10 prosenttia korkeampaa kuukausimaksua uusille käyttäjille. Korotus koskee niin Premiumia kuin perhe- ja opiskelijalisenssejäkin. Heinäkuusta alkaen hinta nousee myös vanhoille käyttäjille. Norja on valikoitunut testimaaksi siksi, että siellä suuri osa kuuntelijoista on maksullisen palvelun käyttäjiä.

Mitä järkeä on kurittaa maksavia asiakkaita? Ainakin rahaa tulisi enemmän – elleivät maksullisten versioiden käyttäjät suutu. Koko olemassaolonsa ajan raskaita tappioita tehneelle yhtiölle näytön paikka on kova. Miten vakuuttaa sijoittajat ja miten kääntää tulos voiton puolelle? Jollakin aikataululla – pörssimaailmassa mieluiten heti – homma pitäisi saada tuottamaan voittoa.

Ajoitus on silti ilmaisversion parannukset huomioon ottaen erikoinen. Nähtäväksi jää, minkä verran korotus vaikuttaa. Koko musiikin suoratoistobisnes on suosiostaan huolimatta taloudellisesti melko huteralla pohjalla. Ainakin vielä pari vuotta sitten myös Deezer teki tappiota. Tidalin on huhuttu olevan vielä suuremmissa vaikeuksissa, ja esimerkiksi norjalainen Dagens Næringsliv povasi sille joulukuussa konkurssia kuuden kuukauden sisällä.

Sen sijaan Amazonin, Applen ja Googlen suoratoistopalvelujen tilanne on toinen. Bloomberg muistuttaa, että ne ovat olemassa pikemminkin houkutellakseen ihmisiä ostamaan kyseisten jättiyhtiöiden muita tuotteita. Myös Spotify on mitä ilmeisimmin kehittelemässä omia tuotteitaan, mutta toistaiseksi sellaisia ei ole julkistettu.
