Apple has surprisingly announced a new generation of iPod Touch music player. The previous model was introduced in 2015. In 2017 Apple discontinued the production of iPod Nano and Shuffle, so it could be assumed that the Touch would be on the chopping block next. But it didn’t happen.
The new model features the A10 Fusion chip, which is familiar from iPhones from a few years ago. It is promised to be twice as fast compared to its predecessor. New features also include FaceTime group video calls, which can be attended by a maximum of 32 people. The app automatically enlarges the screen of the current speaker, making it easier to follow the conversation.
The iPod Touch now also supports augmented reality games. The graphics speed is said to have been tripled. Plans are to release around a hundred new ad-free games through the Apple Arcade subscription service that opens this autumn. According to Apple, the AR support extends to not only games but also to educational and web browsing use. It can, for example, bring three-dimensional objects such as toys or sculptures to life and recognize locations. The display is four inches in size.
The new iPod Touch is already available in Apple's own online store. The most basic 32 GB version costs 239 euros, the 128 GB model 349 euros, and the 256 GB model 459 euros. Color options include gray, white, gold, blue, pink, and red.
