Chord presented less extreme versions of its Ultima amplifier

Chord Electronics presented two mono power amplifiers at the Munich High End Show that utilize the same technology as the company’s integrated Ultima flagship amplifier introduced last year.

The Ultima 2 terminal produces 750 watts of power, while the more affordable Ultima 3 has 480 watts. They replace the SPM 6000 MKII and SPM 1400 MKII models at the same time.

The artwork for the Ultima series is based on research by Malcolm J. Hawksford, emeritus professor at Essex University, which was taken forward by Bob Cordell of Bell Labs and John Franks, owner and chief designer of Chord Electronics. It is promised to offer particularly low distortion and operate at high voltage.

The enclosure is made of aircraft-grade aluminum, and the color options are Jett Black and Argent Silver. The front panel is 28 millimeters thick. The rear features balanced and unbalanced connectors and speaker connections. The new amplifiers can be stacked on the manufacturer’s own Choral Ensemble stand.

While the price of the Ultima in the UK is 90,000 pounds, the Ultima 2 costs 18,360 pounds and the Ultima 3 11,000 pounds. It is worth remembering, however, that the latter are required for a stereo setup plus an additional front amplifier. There is no information available on the arrival of the devices in Finland.
