Zeiss has obtained a patent for a new type of zoom camera solution for smartphones. The patent was applied for as early as 2015, but it was granted in March of this year. This was noticed by the German WinFuture.de.
Zooming would be achieved by rotating between lenses that offer different focal lengths. In conventional zooms, the lens elements are moved in the longitudinal direction, which requires a lot of space. This would allow phones to have more zoom options.
HMD Global, which manufactures Nokia phones, and Zeiss recently announced a partnership exclusively for that purpose. In conjunction with the announcement of the partnership, a teaser video was also released featuring lenses similar to those mentioned in the patent, as well as the logos of Nokia and Zeiss. You can watch the video below.

Rumors about Nokia's upcoming models are circulating, but there is no mention of a new zoom camera in them yet. However, the speculated 8-megapixel model is believed to already feature some kind of Zeiss optics.
