Focal has updated its flagship Utopia headphones
French hi-fi manufacturer Focal has updated the Utopia headphones it introduced in 2016. The design has been revamped. It draws inspiration from the design of the newer Focal models Clear Mg, Stellian and Celeste. To achieve lightness, recycled carbon fiber has been used in the construction.
The acoustics have also been further developed. The speaker cone is new. It is made of copper for reliability and aluminum for lightness. The result is promised to be more neutral and powerful bass sound and softer upper frequencies. Additionally, the headphones now have M-shaped lugs inside the earcups, which are said to improve linearity and accuracy.
Like the previous Utopia generation, the new model features 40 millimeter wide beryllium elements and a completely open structure. The elements reproduce air at pressures from 5 hertz to 50 kilohertz with no passive or active correction. The headband is covered with genuine leather. The earcups are made of memory foam.
The price for the headphones is 5,000 euros. They are delivered in a faux leather package, which also includes a cloth-covered case, three and 1.5-meter cables, and an adapter for the 6.35 mm connection. The first units are expected to arrive in Finland possibly as early as September.
